Google Maps Travel Journal

painting series, 2023

In my Google Maps Travel Journal series, I was interested in the motif of travel, the distance between the recipient and the spectacle, and the parallels between the virtual and the real. For the paintings, I took screenshots of landscapes that I visited through Google Maps. In my virtual journey, I have been to remote places that I am unlikely to ever visit in real life, and also places where famous landscape painters like Cezanne and Hockney have painted their pictures. I printed out these landscapes and manually manipulated them to create images that bear both the traditional characteristics of landscape painting and elements of their source that modify these. The absence of a horizon line, the hauntingly elongated shadow of the photographer, the forgotten body parts of moving human figures, or the digital map details written on the image plane all break the view of the landscape and add up to a feeling of uncanny.
